Archduke Francis Joseph Charles, the later Emperor Francis II (1768−1835), at the Age of Seven

1774/75 | Johann Zoffani

The white uniform with the necklace of the Order of Saint Stephen and the Golden Fleece and the small sword indicate the future role of the Archduke as emperor. Globe, books, ar- mour and the antique bust of Marcus Aurelius allude to the comprehensive, enlightened education that the future ruler received in Florence. Positioned on a platform, Archduke Fran- cis gazes directly into the eyes of the viewer.
