Christ Carrying the Cross

Surrounded by henchmen, Christ carries his cross to the site of execution. The style of painting is rich in contrasts, and does not flinch from depicting the ugly, the cruel and the gloomy. The picture probably derives from a Neapolitan painter from the circle of artists around Ribera (1591–1652), court painter to the Spanish viceroys in Naples.
