Stilt shoes like these were worn by women in Venice and the Iberian Peninsula from around 1500. The leather cut decoration on the base indicates a possible origin in Milan. Wearing platform shoes elongated the silhouette of the wearer. They towered above their surroundings and thus emphasised their high status in the truest sense of the word.
