The Embriachi Workshop in Venice. Around 1395 the Venetian workshop of Baldassare degli Embriachi began producing caskets, mirror frames and small altars decorated with a characteristic combination of wood inlay and carved animal bone, which was a cheap substitute for ivory. Large numbers of caskets were made in serial production. Highly prized for their rich decoration, they were also imitated outside Venice.
