Octagonal Casket

late 14th c./early 15th c. | Baldassare degli Embriachi

“Cofanetti nuziali” from Venice in the Time around 1400 These polygonal caskets are decorated with reliefs of couples in court dress or with mythological scenes from the story of Paris, the rape of Helen, or the birth of Adonis. Such receptacles were created in great numbers in the Embriachi workshop in Venice. They were used at weddings to present gifts of jewellery to the bride. The shields borne by ignudi or genii might be painted with the couple’s coats of arms.
