Cardinal Bernhard Clesius

The lawyer and cleric Bernhard von Cles or Clesius (1485–1539) was one of the leading political personalities in the early 16th century. Originally from Trentino, he became Bishop of Trient and began his political career as Privy Councillor to Emperor Maximilian I. From 1522 onwards, he served Ferdinand I as minister, crowning him King of Bohemia in 1527 and becoming his most senior chancellor. In 1530 he was appointed Cardinal. This portrait was painted in 1531 when Clesius was staying in Cologne for the election of Ferdinand to the Roman King.
