Cabinet Chest

Around 1590 Emperor Rudolf II called the Florentine master Cosimo Castrucci to the court in Prague, where he established the art of commesso di pietre dure. The workshop was the first to depict landscapes in this mosaic technique, which the emperor obviously valued very highly. When the workshop was disbanded around 1624, the leading master in its final phase, Giuliano Pandolfini, returned to Florence.
