Ceres
ca. 1602/05 | Ottavio Miseroni
The figurative relief composed of hardstones (commesso) in the manner of a cameo is considered an invention of Ottavio Miseroni. He was probably inspired by the Pietre-dure-inlay work of the Castrucci workshop in Prague. This new technique made Miseroni independent of the natural coloured veining of the stone and achieved new naturalistic material and pictorial effects. The pink agate of the flesh contrasts with the jasper of the hair and the speckled agate of the robe and the wreath of wheat ears on Ceres' head. The relief bust is set on translucent chalcedony with a dark underlay. This object was probably one of the first made by Ottavio Miseroni in this new technique. This is also confirmed by the setting by Jan Vermeyen which must be dated before 1606.
