Ablassbrief für die Sankt Nikolauskapelle
1486
Letters of indulgence outlined the promises made to abbreviate the time one would spend in Purgatory, in this case for the visitors of the St. Nikolaus-Chapel. The concept of indulgences dates back to the 11th century. The main factors in a theology of indulgences were: the ability of the Church to pardon sins, proper disposition of the faithful, and certain prescribed charitable acts to satisfy the earthly debt, as outlined in the dimensions of the indulgence. To manifest visibly the contrition of the faithful, certain Bishops requested financial payment as the satisfaction of the temporal action–the amount one paid was directly related to the indulgence gained–an obvious abuse of the Church’s power. Such abuse caused Martin Luther’s Reformation in 1517.
