Das in Venedig so beliebte Motiv einer Versammlung von Heiligen um die Madonna erfuhr durch die Generation der Bellini-Schüler eine Wandlung: Die streng hierarchische Ordnung der Heiligen wird mehr und mehr gelockert. Lotto hatte an dieser Entwicklung maßgeblichen Anteil; er band als erster die früher stets thronende Madonna gänzlich in die Umgebung ein und ließ dieses eng verschränkte Miteinander von Figur und Natur durch wechselndes Licht und Schatten geheimnisvoll belebt erscheinen.
