Lorenzo Soranzo

Lorenzo Soranzo, who came from a Venetian Patrician family, had been a member of the Council of Venice since 1553. This could be the reason for the portrait being commissioned. Tintoretto dispenses here with signs of formal display as usually found in portraits of highranking dignitaries of the High Renaissance. For him it was more important to render visible the individual, personal features of the person depicted. Thus, besides the year of composition, the only other information recorded on the balustrade are his age (35 years old) and his initials.
