Violin
2nd half of the 18th century | Johann Georg Thir
Johann Georg Thir is considered one of the best Viennese violinmaker from the end of the 18th century. Like many of his colleagues, he was originally from Füssen in Allgäu (Southern Germany), one of the most important violinmaking centres in the world. The carved lions head atop the peg box is an ancient Füssen tradition. Following the Italian tradition, these lions heads soon were to be replaced in Vienna as well as elsewhere with scrolls. The varnish is in mint condition and the fittings are from the 18th century. (rh/bd)
