The Schrammel brothers, Johann (1850‒1893) and Joseph (1852‒1895), were born as sons of a folk musician and a folk singer in Neulerchenfeld and Ottakring, then suburbs of Vienna. Both received extensive musical training; Johann studied under Hellmesberger at the Vienna Conservatory. In 1877, they formed a quartet with the clarinettist Dänzer and the guitarist Strohmayer. From 1891, the button accordion became part of the ensemble’s instruments. “Schrammel music” was soon used as a synonym for Viennese folk music. (rh)
