The Visitation

about 1640 | Theodor van Thulden

In this painting, Van Thulden, who workedwith Rubens in the final years of the master’slife, repeats in reverse a picture on the left panel of the Deposition Altar that Rubens painted in 1612–1614 as one of his early major works for Antwerp Cathedral. However, van Thulden’s painting is not a copy of the engraving by Pieter de Jode published in 1633, as the reversal of left and right might suggest, but was apparently copied directly from the original.
