The Virgin and Child

The inscription names Koloman Räpff, a clergyman who was in the service of the Passau administrator, as the donor of the picture. He commissioned the painting in memory of Father Ludwig Fröschl, the founder of the Brotherhood of the Holy Greeting. In the colouration and modelling of the forms, this work is characteristic of the style of Altdorfer’s old age.
