The Sermon of John the Baptist

about 1621/22 | Esaias van de Velde

Esaias van de Velde was one of the early landscape painters in Holland. As a pupil of Gillis van Coninxloo, who came from Antwerp, he took up the Flemish forest landscape with its decorative execution of the leaves and developed it into a very corporeal depiction of the individual motifs. The sculptural shape of the trees with their dark shades of green and brown is in keeping with the pronounced corporeality of the figures in lively, colourful shades.
