The Marriage of Mary

about 1696 | Luca Giordano

Giordano’s series of paintings of the Virgin Mary illustrate the contrast that was characteristic of his late style between pastel fluidity in the application of paint and the precision of his classicising disegno in the contours of the figures. This classic style appears to derive from Carlo Maratta. Here Giordano is clearly the connecting link between Italian Baroque classicism and the Italian and Spanish painting of the mid and late 18th century (cf. Corrado Giaquinto and Francisco de Goya).
