Ten-piece Ensemble of Double and Lidded Cups

ca. 1593/1600 | Friedrich Hillebrandt

In 1600, Duke William V of Bavaria gave this ensemble to his daughter Maria Anna on the occasion of her wedding to her cousin, the future Emperor Ferdinand II. It attests both to the close family ties between the houses of Wittelsbach and Habsburg and to the importance of gifts for enlarging the holdings of a princely Kunstkammer. The mother-of-pearl decoration is modelled upon works of Indian art.
