Standing falcon

305–31 BC

Early on, the falcon was revered as a sacred animal, associated with the god Horus in particular. The king was believed to embody the god on earth. In Ptolemaic times, the falcon cult was wide-spread in Egypt. Such large figures of falcons in stone were set up in the courtyards of temples.
