St. Hieronymus in the Cell

2nd Quarter of the 16th Century | Quinten Massys

Quentin Massys, father of the painters Jan and Cornelis Massys, was the leading master in Antwerp at the beginning of the 16th century. It is uncertain whether the painting was executed by Quentin Massys alone, thoughthe portrait of the halflength Hieronymus isconsidered to have been his invention. The skull, candles and depiction of Judgement Day all belong to the established repertoire of this genre, which subsequently spread wide and far, notably in the case of Reymerswaele (Inv. Nr. GG 2645).
