‚Sine Cerere et Baccho friget Venus’ (Without Ceres and Bacchus, Venus will feel cold)

around 1590/95 | Bartholomäus Spranger

Youthful Bacchus dominates the composition. Arm in arm with Ceres, he is shown walking away from Venus trying to keep warm by a fire with Cupid wrapped only in a thin veil. The scene illustrates a line from Eunuchus, a comedy by Terence: Without Ceres and Bacchus Venus will feel cold – ie, love cannot blossom without food and wine.
