Shell-Shaped Bowl on a High Foot
ca. 1603 | Giovanni Ambrogio Miseroni
Rudolf II had a particular affinity to precious stones. He saw them as divine creations that reflected the beauty of the entire world. At the same time he believed in their special healing and otherwise restorative powers. In his Kunstkammer the emperor had some 200 vessels of such stones as rock crystal, jasper, agate and jade. In 1588 he established his own stonecutting workshop in Prague, although he also continued to acquire works made in the workshops of Milan.
