Return from the Hunt

about 1630/35 | Jan Olis

Around 1630 the monochrome style of landscape painting began to assert itself in genre painting as well. The bright colours of the clothing were reduced in favour of nuanced shades of grey, brown and black with frugal accents in light colours. In this respect these pictures differ from the works of older painters. This painting was formerly considered to be a work by the leading painter of Amsterdam society, Pieter Codde. A provisional attribution has now been made to another, lesserknown painter in his circle, Jan Olis.
