Pyramidion of Raia
late 18th to early 19th Dynasty, ca. 1335-1294 BC;
The pyramidion, which topped Raia’s tomb, makes reference to the daily course of the sun across the heavens. On the four sides, the tomb owner, his father, and baboons worship the boat of the sun god. On the surface oriented towards the east the baboons greet the sun at dawn; to the west they worship the setting sun. The Egyptians understood the cries of the baboons as greetings to the sun.
