Postreise Erzherzog Ferdinands II. (1529-1595) nach Brüssel

um 1560 | Niederländisch

In 1555 King Ferdinand I instructed his son Archduke Ferdinand II to travel to Brussels to avert the abdication of his uncle Emperor Charles V, whose efforts to strengthen Catholicism against Protestantism had failed. On the right side the cortege on horses and Ferdinand II, whose arrival is announced by horn players can be seen. On the left side the salutation is shown in front of a building, which provides an insight into the sickroom of Charles V. The background shows the city silhouette of Brussels. The painting was shown in Ferdinand’s library in Ambras.
