Portrait of a Man with Beard
1533 | Georg Pencz
Pencz is first documented in 1523, when he became citizen of the city of Nuremberg. As an advocate of the Reformation he was accused of heresy and in 1524 was banned from Nuremberg. He was able to return, however, following a journey to Italy and was appointed city painter in 1532. In his historical and mythological paintings, portraits and copperplate engravings, Pencz unites Renaissance influences from both north and south of the Alps.
