Portrait of a Cellist

around 1745/50 | Giacomo Ceruti

In contrast to the “idealised” portrait of a musician, seen in its perfect form in the painting of Christoph Willibald von Gluck (Inv. No. GG 1795), the Lombard portraiture of the period features everyday situations and unvarnished, sometimes even trivial facial expressions. Individuality is defined not by social standing but rather by an earthy realism.
