Peasants’ Church-Fair

around 1650 | David Teniers d. J.

Here Tenier depicts in great detail a merry peasants’ churchfair, which is also joyously celebrated by elegantly dressed burghers – the group on the right-hand edge of the frame. The Austrian coat of arms and the Spanish double-headed eagle on the inn to the left indicate Habsburg domination over the Southern Netherlands, yet could also be interpreted as an allusion to the man who commissioned the painting: most likely Leopold Wilhelm had the painting executed for his brother, Emperor Ferdinand III.
