P. Carolus Scribani S. J.

around 1629 | Anthonis van Dyck

With his special gift for psychology, van Dyck characterises the Father Superior of the Jesuit Order as a man of great determination and ascetic rigour. Pale colours, modest props such as the crucifix and book as well as the pillar symbolising solidity, all reinforce the serious impression given by the portrait. Scribani (1561–1629), Rector of the Order Colleges in Antwerp and Brussels, initiated the construction of the Jesuit Church in Antwerp (see also Inv. Nos. GG 517 and 519).
