Ornate Basin with Ewer, Basin

ca. 1592 | Nikolaus Schmidt

This set was created in Nuremberg but imitates a type of decoration popular in Gujarat, India, with a scalelike arrangement of mother-of-pearl platelets. Southern German mercantile houses imported similarly formed vessels and caskets as collectors’ items, which provided inspiration for local artisanal production. Here, cast animals and large pearls further enliven the rim of the basin.
