Basin with a Depiction of the Story of Europa

ca. 1602/06 | Christoph Lencker

Emperor Rudolf II acquired this basin from one of the finest Augsburg goldsmiths of the time. It depicts Europa being abducted from among her companions by Jupiter, who has turned into a bull. The picturesque composition of the scene anticipates the later, popular concept of large decorative plates. The basin originally formed a set with a ewer, now lost, in the shape of a bull with Europa.
