Ornamental Cup, so-called Saint Michael’s Cup

1532

In 1533, King Francis I of France acquired this golden goblet, decorated with precious stones, in Antwerp. The reliefs on the cuppa depict bacchanalian-erotic scenes. The lid is surmounted by a figure of the Archangel Michael assembled from individual diamonds, suggesting a connection to the French royal “Ordre de Saint Michel”.
