When asked to produce elaborately decorated pieces, goldsmiths often collaborated with sculptors, with the latter providing the models that were then executed in gold and silver. These models would sometimes be preserved in a workshop for several generations and employed for similar commissions or for training apprentices. That is probably the purpose once served by the figures of a nude couple with a child.
