Matthias Corvinus, King of Hungary
With Matthias Corvinus, the Italian Renaissance gained entry into Hungary. The portrait shows the king in profile with a crown of oak leaves, familiar from the depictions of Roman emperors on antique coins and now imitated for prominent contemporaries. Such reliefs were popular in Florence from 1450. This work may have been a diplomatic gift from Lorenzo de’ Medici.
