Liriope and Narcissus

As it was relatively cheap to produce and copy small bronze reliefs, so-called plaquettes, they were increasingly sought-after by collectors and scholars looking for artworks that depicted classical subjects. Their content was primarily based on stories from Greek and Roman mythology. Only rarely did plaquettes serve any “practical” purpose, for instance as a decorative element used to embellish a cabinet or some other sumptuous piece of furniture.
