It is particularly difficult to cut a statuette fully in the round from precious stone and at the same time take advantage of the material’s natural colouration. The finest such works were made by members of the Miseroni family of Milan. Otherwise, the figurative elements used in glyptic art were mostly limited to elements added by a goldsmith, as was the case with the finials on the vessels by Hans Kobenhaupt displayed here.
