King Philip II of Spain

ca. 1580 (head); 1753 (bust) | Pompeo Leoni

Like his father Leone, Pompeo Leoni worked as a sculptor for the Spanish Habsburgs. Originally, this head, cast in silver but covered completely in paint, will have been part of a full-length portrait of King Philip. His collections had a lasting influence on his nephew, the later Emperor Rudolf II, who was raised at his uncle’s court, where he acquired an appreciation of art and the standards of quality and exclusivity later reflected in his own Kunstkammer.
