Peter Flötner was one of the most versatile artists active in Nuremberg, one of the leading artistic centres in southern Germany during the 16th century. From 1522 he worked there as master builder, sculptor, medallist and printmaker. His pictorial inventions – widely disseminated with the help of prints – did much to establish the idiom of the Italian Renaissance in southern Germany.
