In the 16th century historiographers assigned a king to each of the twelve historical German tribes. This resulted in a fictive royal lineage designed to emphasize the rights of succession to these rulers of the “German Nation.” The series of plaquettes designed by Flötner around 1540 was exceedingly popular, and was frequently repeated in lead, bronze and silver.
