Figur der Commedia dell' Arte

Ende 16. Jahrhundert | Innsbrucker Hofglashütte

The commedia dell' arte was an impromptu performance the theatrical action of which was mostly played by masked characters. Individual performers adhered all their lives to one chosen role and acted it with the lively expressive gestures of their southern temperament. This Venetian figurine flanked by two others is giving a fiery burlesque rendering of a character known as the Capitano. These statuettes are timeless in their style and do not correspond to the sculptural concept of the day. Not unlike caricatures, they are executed in an exaggeratedly theatrical form.
