Ewer with Handle
3rd third 16th c.
One of the cabinets in the Ambras Kunstkammer contained numerous bowls, cups, tankards, and lamps made of alabaster. This material, which looks similar to marble but is far easier to work, was quarried in the realm of the Tyrolean sovereigns. The large number of alabaster works in the collection hence sought to suggest the wealth of the land in corresponding natural resources.
