Annunciation to the Virgin and Adoration of the Shepherds
1602 | Paolo Piazza
In the sixteenth century, Italian painters in particular experimented with various types of stone as a support for cabinet and devotional pictures. Inspired by the stones’ natural colouration and pattern, they incorporated them into their designs. Because of the great interest that Emperor Rudolf II showed in the artistic treatment of stone this type of painting flourished at his court.
