The portrait of Archduke Albrecht, younger brother of the later Emperor Rudolf II, is part of a series with similar depictions. As befits their princely origins, the children of the future Emperor Maximilian II are dressed up here in the appropriate finery. Albrecht still wears the typical dress-like garb of infants with coat-like outer garments. The fashionably interpreted hanging sleeves are believed to be a relic of the so-called leading strings which supported a child learning to walk. In the case of the Archduke, the horizontal fastening with buttons is striking, reminiscent of the lacing of the so-called Hungarian (Cossack) coat. Is this seemingly oriental detail possibly a fashionable reminiscence of the feared but also admired Ottomans?
