Emperor Sigismund

ca. 1430/37 | Böhmisch

This contemporary portrait of Emperor Sigismund (1368–1437) is among the earliest examples of autonomous princely portraits north of the Alps. It depicts the last Luxembourg emperor with his typical fur bonnet and slightly open mouth. The latter may be a reference to the emperor’s eloquence, praised by his contemporaries. Formerly attributed to Pisanello, the portrait was certainly painted outside Italy, probably in Prague.
