Emperor Frederick III with a Hoop Crown

late 16th c. | anonym

The Habsburg Emperor Frederick III (1415–1493) was passionate about gemstones and artworks featuring them. He acquired jewels in great numbers, and set his heart on reuniting the dynasty’s holdings that had been dispersed among the different family branches – an endeavour ultimately crowned with success. When he died, his enormous treasures were stored in Linz, Graz and Nuremberg, among other places.
