Emperor Ferdinand III

dated 1655 | Georg Schweigger

The bust, first documented in the treasury collection in 1677, shows Ferdinand III in armour and with the laurel crown of antique imperators. In so doing, the sculptor emphatically presented the power and dignity of the emperor. In fact, the progression and end of the Thirty Years War (1618–1648) had clearly weakened his position within the empire.
