Emperor Ferdinand I

Emperor Ferdinand I (1503–1564), shown here in an early example of a full-length portrait, is regarded as the founder of the Viennese Kunstkammer that was first mentioned in 1554. Extant sources document not only his personal interest in the artistic quality and the age of artworks, but also the actual coins, antiques and exotica he acquired.
