Clay coffin for a woman

early 18th Dynasty, ca. 1550–1500 BC

The mummy was inserted through the oval opening into this tube-like case that is wider towards the top. Face, arms, and breasts are modelled on the lid. Such coffins are documented beginning in the New Kingdom, especially for modest burials outside Egypt.
