Christ on the Mount of Olives

ca. 1612/16 | Hans IV. Pfleger

The imagery of antiquity, mythology and history was dominant in the Prague Kunstkammer. Few reliefs were based on Christian themes, which were more likely to be used in devotional images for chapels and oratories. These two reliefs come from Augsburg, then one of Europe’s leading centres of goldsmiths’ art. A Free Imperial City, it supplied the courts of Europe with high-quality works in gold and silver.
