Cardinal Rodolfo Pio (around 1500–1564),

Cardinal Rodolfo Pio da Carpi, who played a decisive part in the peace negotiations between Emperor Charles V and the French king François I, appears in this bare, close-up portrait with a dignified and austere manner. Previously ascribed to Sebastiano del Piombo, the hard three-dimensional modelling of the brushstroke seems unexpected in Salviati’s work, too.
